Cemetery Description

This is a very nice, quaint country cemetery now surrounded on 3 sides by a new grocery store/retail development. Not long ago, it was on a quiet country dirt road surrounded by farmland. The cemetery contains .6 acres of land and 105 known memorials. The namessake of the church and cemetery is the Martin family who donated the land in 1874 and who have many family members buried here. The oldest known grave is dated 1867 and is a young Martin family member. This burial apparantly occurred as a family cemetery burial before the land was donated. The next known burial occurred in 1882. The Martin's Chapel Methodist Church ceased to exist in approximately 1989 and the current owner of the cemetery property is unknown. This is being researched further as of 12/2024. The eastern portion of the church property, approximately 1.2 acres, containing the church buildings was sold in 1989. That property changed hands several times before being sold to be developed in 2016. The church building and adjoining buildings were torn down and developent ultimately occurred in 2024.
