Description

Cemetery is on private property - no public access. In 1829, long before the City of Jonesboro, Arkansas was established, the first settler of what is now Craighead County, Arkansas, Daniel E. Martin, moved from Greenfield Township in present-day Poinsett Co., to the area later known as \"Martin\'s Spring\", on the former A. A. Keller farm, in what is now the southwest part of the city of Jonesboro. At the time, the spring was the site of a Native American village.\nDaniel Martin cleared land and planted corn there, making him the first white man to clear land for cultivation in what is now Craighead County. Martin also kept the mail at his house in the year 1835, making him the first Postmaster in what is now Craighead County.\n\nDaniel E. Martin was buried in this cemetery in the early 1840\'s. Several of the first settlers of this area also rest there, including members of the Lamberson, Pierce, Stotts, McCarty, and Rickles families.\n\n(information from: \"The History of Craighead County, Arkansas\" by Harry Lee Williams - 1930).\n\nNote: Only a few stones are still standing. A Confederate States of America stone is located in the NW corner of the cemetery.\n
