The Mammoth Cemetery was formally known as the Miller Cemetery and located in the center of the community of Mammoth, near the general mercantile store & post office. This area has always been marked by the flooding of the Lick, Little, and Possum Walk creeks. In the early 1900s, the area experience an overwhelming flood which devastated the Miller Cemetery located in the valley. In its wake, graves were disturbed and opened. Local men repaired the coffins and moved all grave-sites to a hillside nearby now called the Mammoth Cemetery. Records have shown there were up to 400 unmarked field-stone markers in this cemetery at one time. Currently, there are only 12 that can be located.
