Description

An attractive and well-maintained burial ground surrounding the ruins of Kinloss Abbey. Originally a Cistercian Abbey and Monastery (founded 1150) it was closed in 1560 following the Reformation in Scotland, and was largely demolished in 1650. The burial ground contains gravestones dating back to the late 18th century, and is still in use today for new interments. There is an area to the south and east of the abbey ruins, devoted to the graves of members of the Royal Air Force and Commonwealth air forces. This is a consequence of the presence of the former Kinloss air base, close by. Access is from the main road B9089 in Kinloss; turn south down a narrow minor road, signed to Kinloss Abbey, at a junction 100m east of the traffic lights at the junction of B9011 and B9089. The Abbey ruins are visible from the main road. There is a parking area at the entrance, at the NW corner of the burial ground.
