Cemetery Description

This cemetery is home to the graves of Melbourne's earliest African American pioneers. Most of the graves are vaulted and many of them unmarked.
I found several marked and unmarked graves to the east of the obvious cemetery. Those with markings have been photographed and posted. One of the neighbors came to me while I was documenting the stones. She took me to a well-hidden stone from the early 1800s. She has lived adjacent to the cemetery for 80 years. The cemetery is poorly maintained; the grass is cut occasionally. About 50% of the obvious burials have legible markers. All of the legible markers were photographed as of March 16th, 2014. It appears that internments are still being conducted at the west end of this cemetery.
