Houston National Cemetery is a United States National Cemetery in unincorporated Harris County, Texas, near Houston. It encompasses 419.2 acres only about half of which is developed. The cemetery had more than 85,000 interments as of 2014. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. First established on December 7, 1965, as a Veterans Administration Cemetery, it became Houston National Cemetery in 1973 after the passage of the National Cemetery Act. It was the only government cemetery constructed in the United States during the 1960s and was the largest of its kind at the time of construction. At 419.2 acres (169.6 ha), the cemetery is smaller than the 624 acres (253 ha) of Arlington National Cemetery.
