In 1862, the German Protestant Church obtained the land across the street for a cemetery. Their old cemetery became known as Old Pickers Cemetery, after the minister Rev. Pickers, and this new cemetery became known as New Pickers Cemetery. In 1916, Old Pickers Cemetery was closed and all burials were moved to New Pickers Cemetery. When this property across the street from the “new” cemetery was purchased, this became known as New Pickers Cemetery and this cemetery across the street became known an Old Pickers Cemetery. By 1996 when the city of St. Louis had taken over the cemetery, the name of both cemeteries had changed to Gatewood Gardens Cemetery and the city has kept that name.
