Description

AKA: Fort Worden Post Cemetery The Fort Worden Cemetery is located in the Fort Worden State Park at Port Townsend, Washington on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The original Fort Worden was named after the U.S. Navy Admiral John Worden who commanded the USS Monitor in its historic battle with the Merrimac during the American Civil War. In the early days of the fort, memorial services were usually for the garrison alone. In town, citizens paraded to local cemeteries every Memorial Day in recognition of the dead of the Civil War, it being at that time the nations most recent and moving conflict. Today the Fort Worden cemetery remains a beautiful and special place to visit with many personal and historical ties to the community.
