Evergreen Cemetery was established in 1910 by the LaSalle Sales Organization. The LaSalle Sales Organization was a partnership of Max Guthman and Jacob Rothschild. Both men studied cemetery care management under the meticulous care of Ossian C. Simonds at Graceland Cemetery. After perfecting their skills, they established several cemeteries in the rapidly growing city of Chicago, one of which was Evergreen Cemetery, now part of Evergreen Park. The designer of the cemetery was well-known Danish landscape architect, Svend Lollesgard. When Evergreen Cemetery was first established, only flush markers were allowed. It was built as a memorial park and the natural beauty was the selling point of the cemetery. As times passed, upright monuments were allowed, but restrictions were placed, so that the natural beauty was never disturbed. Gardens were created with shrubs and privet hedges to create the serene environment surrounding the upright memorials.
