The Cliveden War Cemetery is on the Cliveden estate near Taplow, Buckinghamshire. It was formerly the Astor family home and is now owned and maintained by the National Trust. The main house is a luxury hotel. At the outbreak of the First World War Lady Nancy Astor opened the estate to the recuperation of wounded servicemen. The Canadian Red Cross built at hospital that was initially known as the Duchess of Connaught Hospital in 1915. In 1919 it was renamed No 15 Canadian General Hospital. The presence of a war cemetery in a private estate is unusual and the site was prior an Italian sunken garden. This was originally designed and landscaped by the first Viscount Astor in 1902. The Astor family gave permission for the garden to be used as a cemetery for those that died at the hospital. There are 45 monuments covering the two world Wars, with only two from the Second World War.
