Description

This large garden cemetery features truly remarkable headstones belonging to the Christie, Johnson, & Ward families who were associated with the mining operations in the Thetford Mines region. Christ Church replaced an initial church built from 1839 - 1843, so presumably, the cemetery existed then.. One of the first ministers appointed to the Christ Church, Rev. Robert Grant Ward, is resting there. The cemetery was landscaped and plots were laid out about 1929. The ground was leveled and earth was brought in. Prior to this, many of the shallow graves were mounded up with dirt, due to the rocky subsurface conditions. There were no formal grounds keeping of the cemetery prior to this, and the grass was allowed to grow. One negative effect of the landscaping in 1929, was that the mounded graves were leveled off, thereby erasing from view, the obvious gravesites. Thus, there are burials here for which we have no markers.
