The Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen opened January 4, 2006. It is the first of four cemeteries built and run by the Texas Veterans Land Board, under the Texas General Land Office. The current size of this cemetery is 174 acres with up to 50,000 burial plots. Before its expansion, there were only about 7,000 plots available for Veterans.
The cemetery's 174 acres was previously part of Fort Hood that was donated to the federal government. This cemetery accounts for 6,000 of the 10,000 Veterans to be buried in Texas State Veterans Cemeteries.
