From Maynardville TN, go north on Maynardville Highway (33) and turn left on Little Valley Road for about one mile, Big Barren is on the left. Big Barren Cemetery was first started by the Tennessee Valley Authority during the "Norris Reservior Project" back in the 1930's. TVA relocated thousands of grave sites that were going to be flooded. TVA granted plots to family heirs to have their loved ones relocated to higher grounds. Many of the unmarked graves are now identified through much research. Big Barren has continued to grow over the years with new grave sites being added yearly.
