Description

St Mary’s Berkeley is a large medieval church, with separate bell tower and extensive churchyard. It is next door to both Berkeley Castle and Dr Jenner’s House and Garden. Dr Edward Jenner was the pioneer of the Smallpox vaccine. The somewhat unique separate bell tower makes the church look unusual and is believed to be built this way so that it wasn't a threat to the castle if the church was captured in a siege. Inside is an amazing almost 360 degrees of stain glassed windows. Outside the cemetery holds many ancient monuments from the 1600s onwards, many still readable to this day.
