Description

Burials for the parish of St Swithin’s, Walcot occurred north and south of the church (the Old Ground) as well as in the church’s crypt and at Walcot Gate (the Cemetery or Lower Burial Ground). The graveyard in Walcot Street at Walcot Gate dates from 1780 although the mortuary chapel has a date of 1842. From 1848 the parish made use of Lansdown cemetery (see separate section) and from 1864 it had the major part of Locksbrook Cemetery (see separate section). In the 19th century Walcot Parish was the second most populous parish/ward in the country (after St Marylebone) and in the period 1711-1864 there were over 33,000 burials. There are relatively few memorials; there are some by the church (including a mausoleum to the south-west of the church) and more in the cemetery. However the latter are deceptive as, in 1924-5, the memorials were uprooted and placed neatly around the mortuary chapel in order to clear the burial ground for a children’s play area which opened on Fri 9 Jun 1925. Bath Record Office’s Bath Burial Index (https://www.batharchives.co.uk/) has online documentation produced by Phil Bendall for the burial grounds based on the burial registers. It includes internal memorials and the mausoleum.
