Description

This cemetery opened in the 1700s and was in use until 1853, when all urban graveyards were closed due to the prevalence of cholera. It became known locally as Plaguey Fields and later as Granny\'s Park. It is now known as Ballast Hills Burial Ground and has a sign at one entrance with this name which was put there by the local charity the Ouseburn Trust. The cemetery was landscaped in 1930 and most of the headstones were removed and incorporated into the paths, where a lot can still be read today. There are also some headstones standing to the right hand side of the former school building that backs onto the site. See http://newcastlephotos.blogspot.co.uk/2009/05/ballast-hills-burial-ground.html and http://www.tynesidesilentcities.com/page_ballasthills_burialground.htm, which have photos including a newspaper clipping from 1926 before the landscaping took place and some burial records.
