Description

Directions to Athens Cemetery: From County Road 5 in Isanti, go south on Highway 65 for 2.5 miles. Turn left (east) on County Road 9 (269th Avenue NE) for 1.8 miles. The cemetery is on the south side of the road, just east of Flanders Street NE. The cemetery is surrounded by large evergreen trees. History of the Church that once stood next to the cemetery: Athens Lutheran Church - Began as a daughter of the Cambridge Lutheran Church. Organized in 1878 as a separate congregation on section 10 of Athens Township. Built a church in the cemetery in 1882. Built a larger building in 1904 one mile west of section 9. Burned in 1930. Combined with churches at St. Francis and Bradford (Long Lake) from 1897-1907. Remained with Long Lake until 1965. Moved to Isanti after the 1930 fire and acquired the Methodist (Union) Church to become Faith Lutheran. Added a parish hall in 1950 and had a major remodeling in 1981.
