Description

Situated on the main Wakefield to Castleford Road through the village and adjacent to the small modern library, the Cemetery is overlooked on three sides by housing development. Looking north over the low brick-built boundary wall there are pleasant views over open fields down the slope of the valley to the river Calder, the Aire and Calder navigation, and the tiny hamlet of Bottom Boat. The nearest motorway junction is No 31 on the M62. Opened in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, the Cemetery was laid out on a flat area of ground, having twin chapels, situated in the heart of the site, together with a purpose-built lodge in the Cemetery entrance. These buildings which fell into disrepair, have long since been demolished, leaving the Cemetery with an open aspect. One original building which still remains, however, is the old brick built mortuary, which has been used as a workman’s cabin and store shed.
