This Cemetery was established in 1858. In 1980 it was a closed Cemetery meaning no other burials were permitted here. Several politican's and Mayors are buried at Addington Cemetery. Kate Sheppard, a prominent member of the New Zealand Suffrage movement (a movement to allow women the right to vote)and the country's most famous suffragette is buried here, Sheppard appears on the New Zealand ten dollar note.
