Description

Scanlonville Cemetery (also known as Remley's Point Cemetery) is a historic African-American cemetery located in the Scanlonville neighborhood of Mount Pleasant, SC. Just across from downtown Charleston, the area was known as Remley's Point before the Civil War for the Remley family who owned a plantation here. After the Civil War, John L. Scanlan or Scanlon purchased the property at auction. He formed the Charleston Land Company, a cooperative association aimed at helping freed slaves own land. Scanlonville included a park and a cemetery for residents. The cemetery is located on Molasses Creek and is accessed via Fourth Avenue. There is new development in the vicinity, although it appears (as of January 2015) that the area immediately adjacent to the west is designated as a park. The cemetery is still active. Scanlonville Cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Information for this cemetery was taken from the NRHP nomination form and from the Chicora Foundation Research Contribution 341-- Scanlonville, Charleston County, South Carolina: The Community and the Cemetery, by Michael Trinkley.
