Description

A large cemetery of about 10.8 acres owned and managed by Edinburgh City Council. It is was opened in 1846. There are no new burial plots available. There is a significant memorial on the north-west wall of the cemetery, to the victims of the Gretna troop train crash disaster. This occurred at Quintinshill on 22 May 1915, and 215 soldiers of the 1st/7th Battalion The Royal Scots were killed. The men, mostly from Leith, were on their way to board ship at Liverpool in order to travel to the battlefront at Gallipoli. The original entrance to the north-west side off Broughton Street has been sealed up. The only entrance for pedestrians and vehicles is now on Pilrig Street, on the north-east side, where there is also limited parking inside the boundary.
