Description

The Fort Devens Post Cemetery, when it was originally established on the grounds of Camp Devens in 1931, was originally called the Malvern Hill Cemetery. When Camp Devens became Fort Devens in 1932, the installation began to take on a more permanent location for troops. it was during that time that leadership decided to begin construction of a new cemetery on the grounds. Between 1938 and 1940 many decedents were moved from both the Malvern Hill Cemetery and the Deer Island Cemetery in Boston Harbor. Since that time the Fort Devens Cemetery has developed a rich and colorful history. Its past provides a glimpse into the life and times of soldiers who fought in six of America’s wars – the War of 1812, Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. It also continues to be one of the most active Army cemeteries with multiple ties to the community and a setting for multiple dedications and wreath laying events each year.
